Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, including leading the preparation of the monthly and annual financial statements. Additionally, the Controller is responsible for establishing a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk and ensure the accuracy of the company’s reported results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. He/she oversees the day-to-day activities of the accounting team and is responsible for their training and development.  


  • Provide overall management of Accounting function and team including bi-weekly Dashboard 1:1 meetings, scheduled reviews, and performance management as needed
  • Maintain an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Conduct team training and take responsibility for team’s general knowledge level
  • Implement and ensure adherence to documented accounting policies, procedures and controls
  • Identify opportunities to increase department efficiencies and improve processes
  • Execute specific projects as identified by management
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure payroll is processed on time each period
  • Ensure commissions are calculated and paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that regular bank reconciliations are completed
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
  • Maintain chart of accounts
  • Maintain orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Oversee preparation and delivery of timely and complete financial statements, including P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statements, AR & AP reports and sales reports
  • Examine revenue and gross profit on a monthly basis to ensure proper recognition, accurate matching of costs, and reasonable gross profit in each product/service category
  • Calculate and report key sales, expense and operating metrics
  • Maintain Product Line and Customer profitability analysis
  • Analyze and identify expense trends, and identify potential cost savings opportunities
  • Support the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and prior year results and identify drivers behind significant variances
  • Assist with questions arising from the leadership team
  • Monitor cash and debt levels
  • Develop and maintain 13 week cash flow forecasts
  • Responsible for all tax, license and registration reporting and compliance
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with 10+ years accounting experience
  • CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • 3+ years experience in a supervisory or managerial accountant role
  • Excellent general accounting knowledge, including an extensive understanding of current accounting principles
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial and tax regulations
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Detail oriented with a forensic mindset
  • Highly proficient Microsoft Excel skills.  Proficient with other Microsoft Office and Google Documents applications
  • Extensive experience with accounting software; QuickBooks preferred
  • Experience with payroll administration
  • Must be professional, possess excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to handle sensitive, confidential situations
  • Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy
  • Must be able to effectively interact and communicate with outside customers, vendors, professional service providers and individuals at all levels of the company
  • Work requires continuous attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and portray demonstrated abilities to manage multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Effective decision-making abilities are necessary
