Summary

The Database Lead works as part of the System Architect team to set the vision, policies and processes around SproutLoud’s  architectural runway. The Database Lead must have a deep understanding of SproutLoud’s business needs and he/she will work with the architect team to develop strategies, POC and processes to support the business vision.

The Database Lead works closely with other members of the database team to define clear policies and processes to acquire, process and store business data in an optimal and secure way. In addition the Database Lead collaborates with database developers and other team members of the team to improve the quality of the design, development, testing and deployment processes.

The Database Lead coaches and supports other database developers to grow and succeed in their roles. The Database Lead will conduct frequent one on ones with other database developers to review performance and provide coaching.

The Database Lead works closely with Stakeholders, Product Owners and DevOps, providing hands-on support for current and future development efforts. The Database Lead is expected to work on multiple initiatives and support different departments/teams at the same time.

The Database Lead is constantly measuring and improving SproutLoud’s development practices and architecture and understands that change is positive and necessary to improve. For this reason, the Database Lead keeps up to date to current trends and best practices and works with other System Architects to adopt them.

Challenges

  • Work as part of System Architect team in the discovery,  design, development, and deployment of SproutLoud’s business initiatives
  • Responsible for the architectural design, integrity, security and management of SproutLoud’s data
  • Partner and collaborate with database developers on data design, architecture and implementation concerns
  • Conduct architectural reviews of existing data repositories and recommends adjustments
  • Accelerate adoption of standards and new technologies for data management
  • Communicate architecture guidelines, principles and vision to development teams
  • Drive adoption of core technologies, architectural guidelines and standards for data processing and management
  • Research, design, test, and evaluate new technologies and software components
  • Implement POCs and pair with database developers on implementations
  • React quickly to problems and arrive at resolutions/suggestions so problems don’t repeat
  • Have a proactive attitude towards problem resolution rather than a reactive one
  • Work in an agile team environment
  • Work with DevOps team to collaborate on key decisions with regards to application deployment and systems architecture
  • Show a keen eye for detail and ability to adhere to deadlines within a fast paced environment

Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years’ SQL and PL/SQL Development Experience
  • 5+ years’ Design of Database objects and relational tables
  • 3+ years’ experience writing highly optimized Triggers, Functions, Procedures, and Complex SQL Queries
  • 3+ years’ working with high-volume OLTP systems
  • 3+ years’ experience with data warehouses, data marts and ETLs
  • Proficient with SQL Query tuning
  • Experience with high concurrency databases
  • Experience with Database tuning
  • Experience with continuous integration & delivery
  • Experience managing and coaching team members
  • Experience leading software development projects
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Not required, but it would be a plus:

  • Experience within Unix/Linux environments
  • Experience with Version Control Systems.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL
  • Experience some Perl or Shell scripting
